धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे समवेता युयुत्सव: ।
मामका: पाण्डवाश्चैव किमकुर्वत सञ्जय ॥ १ ॥

Transliteration
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca
dharma-kṣetre kuru-kṣetre
samavetā yuyutsavaḥ
māmakāḥ pāṇḍavāś caiva
kim akurvata sañjaya
dharma-kṣetre kuru-kṣetre
samavetā yuyutsavaḥ
māmakāḥ pāṇḍavāś caiva

Synonyms
dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ: the blind king/he who holds the kingdom;
uvāca: said/spoke/uttered;
dharma-kṣetre: in the field of righteousness/sacred duty;
kuru-kṣetre: in the land of the Kurus/ancestral field;
samavetāḥ: gathered/assembled/met together;
yuyutsavaḥ: eager for battle/desiring to fight;
māmakāḥ: my sons/my people/my party;
pāṇḍavāḥ: the sons of Pandu;
ca: and;
eva: indeed/certainly;
kim: what;
akurvata: did they do;
sañjaya: O Sanjaya (the narrator).;
English Meaning
Dhritarashtra said: On the holy field of Kurukshetra, gathered together and eager for battle, what did my people and the Pandavas do, O Sanjaya?
